Much like most of New Brunswick’s cities, Edmundston is incredibly walkable. That said, as you walk along this beautiful place, you’ll find a lot of historical buildings along the way, most of which have been built as Edmundston began developing into the beautiful city that it is today. Most of Edmundston’s main attractions can all be found in a six block radius. The tourist office offers a Leisure Walk Map that provides two walking routes: the first focuses on the city’s shopping places, and the second is a scenic walk covering the historical highlights of Edmundston. The Leisure Walk Map also briefly details the three main churches of Edmundston, the blockhouse, the City Hall, and the train station. And yes, the tourist office also offers a foodie walking tour you must sign up for.

The Fortin du Petit-Sault (small falls) blockhouse was erected in 1841 by the British army during the height of the border wars with the United States of America. The fort was abandoned when the war ended peacefully the following year. The small falls blockhouse was rebuilt in 2000 after a lightning bolt destroyed it. Now, locals and tourists can visit Fortin du Petit-Sault and learn about the history of our neighbors down below.

The trails that pass by the river will give you scenic views of Edmundston, and it technically only feels like you’re strolling around the city. However, if you keep walking, you can visit Bas-Saint-Laurent, Quebec. The Trans-Canada Trail is accessible to anyone, and you can always turn around when you’ve had enough of the walking and sightseeing.

The Railroad Interpretation Centre contains a railroad museum wherein Guy changes the display annually. Guy (the owner) has so many trains in his collection that they can’t be displayed simultaneously! Next, you’ll witness a tiny replica of New Brunswick’s rail network, which is neatly organized on 1,000 square feet. Yes, the replica is complete with tiny props and tiny people! And finally, during the summer, you can ride a 1km rail circuit around the property. Now, isn’t that neat?

Maxime Albert was a local businessman whose money came from the hotel he ran and smuggled his La Bagosse liquor. La Bagosse liquor is a wickedly strong alcohol distilled from any kind of fruit and vegetable within Maxime Albert’s reach. Maxime Albert smuggled his La Bagosse to the US to his ability, even dressing up as a priest and bringing coffins filled with bottles of La Bagosse. Suppose you plan your trip around the Festival of La Bagosse annually. In that case, you can witness the brewing of the original Bagosse in an old-fashioned still, and you’ll be able to try the liquor that made Maxime Albert go to great lengths.
