St. Martins Sea Caves

One of the most famous caves in New Brunswick and all of Canada is the St. Martins Sea Caves. Formed through millions of years of the highest tides in the world hitting them several times a day, the tidal action has carved deep fissures and crevasses into what used to be cliffs surrounding the Fundy coastline. 

St. Martins Sea Caves are still being devoured and hidden by Fundy’s waves during high tide, so make sure it’s going to be low tide when you come around. The caves are the best places for tourists, birdwatchers, cave enthusiasts, and nature lovers to embark on, not to mention the ease of access to the caves. 

Hillsborough Cave

Hillsborough Cave is one of the most recognizable caves in Canada’s Picture Province, as it is commonly passed by bikers who love to take the Hillsborough Cave trail. Called the Gypsum Caves, activities are prohibited in this area unless you’ve gained permission from the Minister for educational and scientific purposes, as human activity might damage the cave. 

The Gypsum Caves have become a habitat for bats and a unique assemblage of rare plants that can be found in arctic environments. Gypsum is a soft, evaporite mineral deposited in the Windsor Sea. 

White Caves

The White Caves of Hillsborough has over 120 meters of area that can be easily explored until you arrive at a crawl-through area where only a select amount of people can fit. It is one of New Brunswick’s longest caves, containing several minerals such as gypsum. Some cave areas have a limestone floor, while the rest are covered with mud and sand. 

The White Caves have shown some evident tear as the New Brunswick Department of Tourism promotes it as an adventure destination. The White Caves have been well-maintained, clean, and basically look like no human has set foot on them, as best as the maintenance can. 

Kitt’s Cave

Kitt’s Cave is an active cave with a small stream of water going through it. It became famous and earned its name when discoverers discovered that beavers chose this cave to raise their young. Kitt’s Cave has many different formations and different types of passages as well. It measures over 141 meters long with eight meters of relief. Cave hunters will find limestones in the area running in narrow bands, leading to other New Brunswick caves. 

Lost Brook Cave

The Lost Brook Cave is a relatively hard-to-find cave near the Albert Mines. Cavegoers will find laminated limestones visible in the exposed rocks on the valley cliffs and caves. Lost Brook Cave has several passageways and a small waterfall inside the cave that is more than just breathtaking. It can be accessed through a dirt road called the Underground Lake Road. 

Berryton Cave

The Berryton Cave can be accessed by following an old, beaten-up path up the mountain for 450 meters. The area is known to be wet and slightly muddy, so it is best to bring some boots. Berryton Cave’s entrance is small and plugged with ice during spring, so remember to be mindful and careful. Tourists and locals can join touring groups for a safer cave exploration. Watch out for the bats that might welcome you in the cave, and bring bug spray because bugs are abundant as you descend.

Harbells Cave is one of the most visited caves in Southern New Brunswick. It is one of the well-groomed trails where visitors and tourists can join touring groups for safer cave exploration, especially since Harbells Cave has a narrow opening and a stream runs completely through the cave. 

Catherine’s Cave

Catherine’s Cave is over 1000 feet long and has a narrow, somewhat hard-to-enter opening. Catherine’s Cave doesn’t sit too far away from the road. In fact, by following an ATV trail, you’ll find the cave with a stream coming out of it. The notable characteristics of the cave are the stalactites in the middle. 

Glebe Pit

The Glebe Pit sits in the Glebe mine that was opened in 1867 and closed in 1882. It was functional for 15 years until it stopped and was sold to Colonel Markham of the Markhamville Mine. The remains of the then-bustling mining industry are still seen near the birches and above the mine entrance of the Glebe Pot. It is explorable, but be incredibly careful.
